Idioms of paimaana

Interesting Information on paimaana

The word ‘Paimaana’ instantly calls to mind a wine-glass, but well beyond the limits of the wine-house, a Paimaana is also found in children’s school bag; and how’s that? Because both have something to do with measurement. ‘Paimaana’ is a standard instrument for measuring the quantity, weight, length, width, thickness, or temperature of an object. The scale that children carry in their school bags is called ‘Paimaana’ in Urdu; now commonly known as FuTTaa. Else ways, it was also used to give them a beating! Paimaana is also referred to the vessel used to measure a liquid, like wine, which in Urdu poetry, is often seen making rounds (Gardish), and sometimes overflowing (Chhalakna). Likewise, ‘Sabr ka Paimaana Chhalakna’ means to lose one’s patience at breaking point, and ‘Sharaafat ka Paimaana’ means the test of one’s good-breeding.
