ماتحت جو شخص کسی کے حکم کا پابند ہو، یا کسی کی نگرانی میں کام کرے، اسے اس شخص کا ’’ماتحت‘‘ کہا جاتا ہے جس کے حکم کا وہ پابند ہے۔ علاوہ ازیں، ’’محکوم، زیرنگیں، زیراختیار‘‘ کے معنی میں بھی’’ماتحت‘‘ اردو میں مستعمل ہے۔ یہ لفظ عربی میں ہے نہ فارسی میں۔ لہٰذا عربی فارسی میں یہ غلط کہا جائے گا۔ اردو کے لئے بالکل صحیح ہے۔ بقول سید سلیمان ندوی،’’ماتحت‘‘ عربی کے لحاظ سے بے معنی ہے، مگر ہماری زبان کا وہ نہایت صحیح و فصیح و با معنی لفظ ہے۔
